some of the same political drama. i this is the first debate for gingrich since becoming a clear frontrunner surging past governor mitt romney. he's now leading romney by double digits in the nationwide fox news poll followed by congressman rick perry and paul. in the same poll he is beating gingrich and romney he has a large leered over the former house speaker. we are live in des moines and gingrich with a lead in iowa in two debates in six days. an advantage for him? >> it certainly would seem so. quinni gingrich because of his long career sent in public office debating issues publicly is seen as the best debater in this presidential lead up to the caucuses. he's the guy who has the best chance of walking away with boast of these events with some success and perhaps pocketing a

few more of the undecideds in iowa. it wouldn't surprise many if he did well tonight did well next thursday in the debate and increased that lead. >> you know, steve one person we have seen consistently do well in these events is ron paul. this team has been working out front in iowa ahead of all of this. is he positioned to perhaps surprise people in the january caucus? >> his campaign has been the one that has been named as doing the proper grass-roots war. this comes from iowa political operatives i have been talking to time and time again. they will name bunch of campaigns but ron paul's campaign is always in there. there was a belief earlier this year that ron paul couldn't get above 10 percent. he's polling around 18 percent. that theory is gone and so is the theory that he can't win iowa. he's in the hunt.

>> what about mitt romney and whether or not he goes after gingrich in this debate tonight. >> there is the belief that he will even his ad which justifies his purse against newt gingrich. it is subtle you have to read into it talking wiabout his 42 year marriage and belonging to the same church. he has been subtle but he has been combative what he needed to. it may be time. >> i asked the question about frontrunners going at each other because that's what we have seen in some of the debates. they rise up on top of the polls and they hone in on each other. >> they do and the big factor that everybody is aware of is time is running out. we have 24 days until they start voting and once they start

gingrich doesn't know what he's talking about. >> it shows that this guy is looking for some votes in his election campaign and shows how ignorant he is in the history of the middle east and palestinian people. the palestinian people have been working for thousands of years. >> steve brown was saying we might expect this to be a topic tonight during the debate six gop candidates debating in iowa. what canned this mean for newt gingrich politically? >> for one thing it means his campaign had to clarify his statements today. newt gingrich sporupports a negotiated agreement between israel and palestinians. whatever is being proposed and negotiated you have to understand decades of complex

that country's border with afghanistan cutting off a key supply route for u.s. and nato forces. pakistan closed two crossings after a nato aircraft strike killed pakistani soldiers in a pair of remote out posts last month. the white house apologized and is issuing a full investigation. they have other none lethal supplies supporting the afghan war. official said the united states is working around the blockade for now and shipping supplies through other countries. meanwhile pakistan's prime minister confirming his government is holding peace talks with the pakistani taliban. this is the same group which is allied with other militants who launched salts on american soldiers inside afghanistan. officials blaming the taliban for hundreds of bloody attacks in pakistan. a member of the militant group reportedly telling the associated press negotiations are quote progressing well.

killed him. it happened yesterday at one of the most recognizable intersections sunset and vine. you may find the video you are seeing disturbing. >> image being the person in that truck. you can see the suspect opening fire on a passing truck then casually turning around and walking away. officials identify him as tyler brim from los angeles. witnesses say the suspect was shouting kill me. kill me and i am going to diaz he was opening fire. he shot and wounded at least one person before he ran out of bullets. pulled out a knife and police opened fire on him. he is in critical condition. we are told he's expected to survive.

a spokesperson -- a woman who claims she once dated the man you see here, she says he and she were texting each other moments before it happened. nothing appeared wrong to her. she describes him as quote a really great person who recently had a breakdown and was going through a rough time. >> the third time may not be the charm. the white house is rejecting a plan by congressional republicans that would extend payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits for millions of americans. the payroll tax cut inacted by president obama last year adds 1,000 dollars to the average family's income. it is set to expire tend of the year unless congress takes action. democrats don't like the latest proposal because it has a controversial oil pipeline. the keystone pipeline would run from canada to refineries along the gulf coast. it's something republicans say

the nation needs now because it would create jobs. >> the senate failed twice this week in extending the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance benefits. the house is now taking a crack at it. speaker boehner thinks the key will be the keystone pipeline. he wants it built sooner rather than later even though president obama wants to wait until next year. >> you heard obama say american people can't wait to take action on jobs. keystone energy project is the definition of an idea the american people can't wait for washington to take action on. >> the senate's top republican says this about the middle class tax relief and job creation act of 2011, unlike the previous proposals from senate democrats this bill was designed to leave out tax hikes that uses bipartisan proposals to reduce spending. they disagree to keep the

>> an fbi affidavit saying two messages were left by a caller who threatened to destroy cancer, raped his daughter and killed his wife. those calls traced tho this guys cell phone lyndon swift 62 years old of tennessee. a local newspaper reporting swift agreed to plead guilty and return for a 13 month prison sentence. swift claiming he made the calls when he was drunk and does not remember the threats. it is cleanup time at boston's dewey swear. they cleared out occupied

protestors they called home for ten weeks. police say it was pretty peaceful. boston joining a growing list of cities who shut down occupy campus in new york and san francisco. a world war ii veteran opening up about his trag stoishg reof survival and the loss of his wife. dana and his wife elizabeth spent 5 gruelling days in the arizona mountains. they were returning home when they got lost during a snowstorm. their beau ishg broke down miles from the nearest town for days they huddled inside the car rationing a couple sandwiches candy bars and cans of juice as long as they could until dana and elizabeth were forced to try to walk for help. elizabeth collapsed just feet from the car and died. dana speaking from the hospital now about his wife's death.

>> i am harris falkner. bottom of the hour. time now for the top of the news. five men one woman who wants the republican nomination for president. the debate in iowa getting underway in under two hours from now. the first. nation nominating contest held in the hawkeye state is 24 days away. in arizona one person is dead after a small plane crashed 25 miles west of phoenix. the faa saying the pilot of the sij engine radioed controllers saying he lost control and was going down. we are told the pilot's name has

not been released. investigators saying a las vegas tour helicopter that crashed and burneded had routine maintenance done the day before the engine was replaced. he it killed all five people aboard. up to 50,000 people there taking the streets in the largest anti government protest ever in the post soviet era. demonstrators claiming widespread election fraud that helps keep gladimir putin in power. the long standing power in russia's government. kitty is there. >> we have seen protests on this scale and it happened nationwide.

now particularly in mouse could you it was a high turnout on the streets. these were peaceful protests but people are angry and frustrated with put tans russia. they want change and above all want farrell elections. then want the elections to be held again under conditions before the allegations of fraud to be fully investigated. there is no sign yet the demands will be met. his popularity is beginning to weigh now ahead of the presidential vote which is due to take place next march. they were sanctioned by the thaut thorities even the state tv in russia. the question is whether the authorities will allow them to continue. the protestors say they are determined to keep up the pressure to keep the opposition

this may get the oddest story in the newscast. a p standoff with police and washington state. >> that is gun fire you hear. a man was barricaded in the house and firefighters were trying to put the fire out while he was shooting at police. at times witnesses saying the fire ignited explosions shooting fireballs into the sky. who men tried to help put out the fire but the gunmen told him to get back. >> told him to get out of there. >> he said get out of here and fired on the police car. >> an officer in that car was not hurt. they haved in identified the shooter. in the end they were forced to let the home burn to the ground. they found two bodies inside the

home as well. two elementary students used a toy gun to steal from other children. the suspects 10 and 8 years old. the boys approached a group of r5 kids walking home earlier this week. one of them pointed the toy gun at the head of the victims and said quote where is the money. the victims turned over candy and chips from their backpacks one of them telling the police officer the gun wasn't real. it sent chills through out this detroit suburb. >> this was taking a weapon and saying here give me your money and using that to scare someone. that is beyond bullying at least in my mind. thuggery, kind of strong for a third grader but at the same time it sure borders it. if this was a tough lesson to learn they are going to learn a
